Tommie Lee Washington is an award-winning graphic designer and also a 3D animator, who has been working for ESPN for over 24 years. Prior to being hired by ESPN, Tommie worked as an Art Director for music videos and infomercials. He has also worked as a free-lance animator with clients including the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers.

Tommie began his graphic design career at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. After one year he transferred to Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, where he receive his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design. In 1994, Tommie was hired by ESPN as a Graphic Designer 1, where he began producing graphics for various ESPN Shows, such as SportsCenter, RPM2Night, and NFL Gameday.

In 1996, He was selected to work on designing ESPNEWS. It was then that he took the initiative to learn 3D animation software on his own and became the first ESPN Employee to create a 3D animation to air on an ESPN network. He continued to be an innovator by creating the first virtual reality set for “Outside The Lines” and first animated over-the-shoulder graphic for ESPNEWS. He was also instrumental in designing the first “Bottom Line” (the score-update and information bar on the bottom of the screen). He has played a significant role in the awarding of several BDA/Promax awards to ESPN’s Creative Services Department, and has also received an Emmy Award for his graphic design work on ESPN’s flagship broadcast “SportsCenter”.

In 2007 he became Senior Animator at ESPNU in Charlotte, NC. Tommie is currently a Coordinating Designer of Motion Graphics for both ESPNU and The SEC Network. In 2014 Tommie completed his Masters Degree in Motion Media from Savannah College of Art and Design.

In efforts to give back to a younger generation of designers, Washington is also an Adjunct Professor for Southern New Hampshire University and The Art Institute of Charlotte, where he teaches Graphic Design and Media Arts.

Mr. Washington has also been a Motivational Speaker at various, Universities, High Schools, and churches of Christ.
